15 August 2019 (Washington, DC) – To put it simply, FTI Consulting is a juggernaut. In general terms, it is a “global business advisory firm” but that belies its extensive work helping organizations across the globe manage change, mitigate risk and resolve disputes in financial, legal, operational, political, and regulatory situations – both reputational and transactional.
For our e-discovery readers, it has built (continues to build) a global information and discovery program.
NOTE: for an excellent read on this last point, read Chris Dale’s piece which analyses a recent article in “Corporate Disputes Magazine” that looks at FTI’s leadership and strategy in building that program (click here).
It has 4,700 employees located in 28 countries. The Company generated $2.03 billion in revenues during fiscal year 2018.
FULL DISCLOSURE: FTI Consulting has been a long-time client of our sister company, The Posse List, which posts document reviews, paralegal positions, forensics positions, litigation support positions, project management positions, compliance positions, general counsel/assistant general counsel positions – pretty much everything across the legal employment field.
But our media team is more familiar with its Telecom, Media & Technology industry practice group.
As consulting firms go, FTI Consulting is often referred to as a “newcomer” – but the firm has made impressive strides to become one of the most respected names in legal analysis and data-driven research to support major initiatives for law firms, banks and the majority of the Fortune 500. The story of how a firm that was a podunk, small-town cluster grew to become a global behemoth is actually quite fascinating. It was achieved through acquisitions, and savvy/bold moves.
But we haven’t the space to do a full history right now (but we will this fall). However several things in that history stand out:
1. Its approach to solutions. The firm pioneered solutions at the intersection of law, communications and technology that affected not only the cases it which they were involved, but the industry itself.
2. The company brought major changes to the presentation of technical courtroom evidence using computer models built with a simple yet powerful goal in mind – to help jury members understand the technical merits in law cases.
3. It gained a reputation for providing complex technical investigations and litigation services.
To get an idea of the document review capabilities of FTI (as well as “big picture” view of the company), here is our interview with Maxwell Calvert, Senior Consultant with FTI. And what is especially great about Max? He started out as a contract attorney doing e-discovery document review, and worked his way up the ranks of FTI.
Just below this video are a few notes on some of the FTI Consulting staff activity at ILTACON 2019:
FTI Consulting will be at full force at ILTA 2019. Just two notes:
• Steven McNew (Senior Managing Director) will be involved on sessions that cover blockchain, information governance, privacy and security.
