23 August 2020 (Athens, Greece) – As I followed the U.S. post office issue I thought it was like a massive, arcane bureaucratic issue but then realised this was a perfect “Election Fraud 101” course. I just do not see how the Democrats are going to solve this one. But as I read some of the analysis over the weekend from a stream of pundits, the following comes through. This may very well be Armageddon for Americans:
1. Trump fears he’s losing because his poll numbers are dreadful. I’m not so sure he’ll lose. 2016 taught us these polls are meaningless. And even if accurate, the Trump team played the correct game in 2016 and will repeat. Their goal needs to be Electoral College votes. I don’t care if Biden is “up 11 points” if his entire lead is from Blue State population strongholds.
2. Trump’s attacking the legitimacy of the election to lay the groundwork for refusing to acknowledge a loss. He’s clearly setting up for it every day.
3. But it’s not enough. He has to do more. So he and Mnuchin installed a crooked board of postal governors and a crooked postmaster general to sabotage the mail.
4. He doesn’t have to succeed in destroying the post office. He has to succeed only in having a little impact on mail service. A little may be enough to tip the balance in close districts where voter suppression is already hard at work. But even that doesn’t have to happen.
5. All he has to do is sow chaos and create doubt. He just needs a hook for the White House, Barr & McConnell to hang their hats on. They call for an investigation to look into the election. They use that as an excuse to sow more doubt and more chaos, maybe destroy records.
6. At the same time, he tells the folks he calls his “second amendment people” a coup is happening. It’s true. He is staging a coup. But he tells them it’s the other side that’s staging a coup. They grab their guns and start occupying state capitals. Maybe burn some buildings.
7. Russia and the Republicans sow more doubt and scream about the lawlessness (that they created). Trump sends in troops and unmarked law enforcement. Meanwhile agitators run false flag operations and agitate both sides. All hell breaks loose.
8. At this point, we are in the worst crisis the nation has seen in a century and a half, and the demagogue runs rampant.
And dear old Melania, the mallard duck decoy of Trump politics. I’m watching people getting more upset about these flowers than about Trump attacking the vote by slowing the mail.
Oh, there will be blood.
